Transkript online s.r.o. is the first and largest company on the Czech market providing professional online transcription. The main mission of this socially oriented business is to remove the communication barriers faced by people with hearing loss and to make it easier for them to take part in everyday life. We have delivered simultaneous speech-to-text transcription under the eScribe service across the Czech Republic since 2012.

According to estimates by the Czech Union of the Deaf, up to 500,000 people in the Czech Republic live with hearing loss. Because the large majority of them do not use sign language, live transcription is the most natural way for them to communicate with the people around them. Our experience shows that it markedly shortens the time needed to handle a request, prevents misunderstandings, and leaves deaf clients more satisfied with the service they received.

On the commercial side we focus primarily on corporate clients with large customer bases, among whom there are inevitably people with hearing loss. Our nearest steps lead towards bringing online transcription to the contact points of public administration and to public offices, where it is needed most.

In terms of development, we specialise in transcription apps for tablets and smartphones and in modern speech recognition and synthesis technology. Mobile devices are where we see the main potential of online transcription.

A social enterprise, in practice

We meet the recognised principles of social entrepreneurship and operate as a social enterprise:

• A socially beneficial goal — employing and including people who are disadvantaged in the labour market.
• More than 30% of our employees come from disadvantaged groups, and we provide them with integration support.
• At least 51% of any profit is reinvested into developing the enterprise and into the socially beneficial goals we have declared.
• Management is independent of any external founder or owner.
• Employees are informed and involved — regularly and systematically — in how the company is run and where it is heading.
• Local focus — we orient our work towards local needs, employ local people and buy from local suppliers.

A new profession for blind people

Transcription is listening and typing. It does not require sight — and people who navigate the world by ear are often exceptionally good at it. We built a training programme, adapted our transcription software to work with screen readers and magnification software, and wrote the methodology for selecting and training transcribers with a visual impairment.

Today more than a quarter of our transcribers are blind or visually impaired. The result is a service for one group of people with a disability, delivered by another — and a set of genuinely skilled, sustainable jobs rather than sheltered ones.

The team

Our team brings together specialists in telecommunications and the internet with professional transcribers, and we build services and software to fit what a client actually needs — whether that is a small business, a large corporation, a non-profit or a single deaf individual.

Our technical specialists are graduates of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague; it was their idea to take simultaneous transcription online in the first place. Our transcribers hold the Czech state master's certificate in keyboard typing and have years of practice behind them.
